SNV ALBANIA

Introducing SNV

SNV is one of the world’s most active development organisations, with almost half a century of international experience. Working in 33 countries across four continents, SNV combines the inspiration of the development worker with professional advisory services, strengthening the capacity of local organisations in order to create real impact in rural economic development. Our vision is a society where all people enjoy the freedom to pursue their own sustainable development. We offer high quality professional services and knowledge to groups and individuals in order to build strong, stable and successful organisations that create the conditions in which people and communities are able to flourish. Our development cooperation reflects relationships of equity, trust and respect in which gender and cultural diversity are acknowledged and where the dignity, creativity and capacities of people take centre stage. We connect people for maximum impact in building prosperity.

SNV Balkans

In the Western Balkans, SNV has been active for over 15 years, working in Albania, Bosnia and Hercegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia and Montenegro. Through a network of 11 local offices, over 100 SNV permanent staff support a wide range of private and public sector organisations at national, regional and local levels, developing the rural economy and assisting the move to EU localisation in agriculture, forestry, tourism, water, and governance. Where possible we include local capacity builders in our approach.

Projects

Of special interest is our record of proven development expertise in a wide portfolio of activities throughout the Balkans. Some of our recent projects include a €4.1 million regional development programme for small rural project initiatives; a €2.2 million forestry project in partnership with World Bank, and Sida; guiding the drafting and implementing of Albania’s National Tourism Law and Montenegro National Forestry Policy; public finance reform and planning for Skopje, Macedonia; improving the city council’s inclusive decision-making processes in Korça Albania, and strengthening their links to NGOs; the Tourism Action Plan process in Albania and Macedonia; inclusive business, economic value chain development and a tripartite Public-Private Partnership advisory undertaking in BiH; support to local tourism organisation in Montenegro; better access to safe drinking water for villages in BiH; cadastre reform for public and private forestry users in Macedonia. We are currently leading a consortium developing a major cross-border project between Albania, Kosovo and Macedonia.

Partners

In these and other projects SNV Balkans works with many local partners and a number of international partners, including Austrian Development Agency, Agriterra/Agriprofocus, Council of Europe, Dinaric Arc Initiative, Embassy of the Netherlands, EC, Eunida, Euronatur, FAO, GTZ, IUCN, Lux-Development, SIDA, UNDP, UNEP, UNESCO, UNWTO, USAID, WBCSD, World Bank. SNV Balkans also operates in partnership with consortiums competing for EU and other tenders, and as a project development catalyst to meet the development needs of countries in the region.
